Vocal Music Students Win Honors

2/3/06 - OWC Music Student Winners

Two music students of Okaloosa-Walton College each won a $2000 university scholarship and first prize honors at a state music competition recently. Laura Hernandez, a sophomore Vocal Performance major, and John Patrick Rogers, an OWC Collegiate High School senior and Piano Performance major, were each declared winners of the Music Student Artist Competition. They were part of 22 OWC students who attended the 2006 Winter Music Symposium of the Florida Community Colleges Activities Association held at Stetson University in Deland, Fla.

Ms. Hernandez has studied voice for 2 years with John Leatherwood and currently studies with OWC's Jeremy Ribando. She performs with the OWC Madrigals, Schola Cantorum and the Northwest Florida Symphony Chorus. Mr. Rogers currently studies piano with OWCs Lois Van Dam and previously studied with Dr. Julia Sublette. At the contest, they performed in a concert at Stetson's Elizabeth Hall Auditorium for the symposium attendees. Afterwards they were selected to each receive the $2000 scholarship to the university of their choice.

Also at the competition, OWC sophomore, Ashley Herbstreith was selected as the FCCAA Symposium Jazz Band's pianist. Twenty members of the OWC Madrigals, under the direction of Allison Everitt performed in the FCCAA Symposium Chorus including: Whitney Carite, Rebeca Doswell, Ali Fisher, Katrina Francis, Elliot German, Laura Hernandez, Kate Kramer, Kris Kuss, Candis Love, Jason Magnuson, Demitre Morekis, Kyle Morrison, Tim Norton, Phillip Purvis, Jessica Rivers, Josh Schlink, Sarah Toms, Justin Townley, Brandon Williams, and Alina Young.

OWC faculty members attending the symposium were: Allison Everitt, Jeremy Ribando, Carolyn Schlatter and Lois Van Dam.
