Arts Center Volunteer Ushers & Docents Recognized

Mattie Kelly Arts Center

5/2/2012 - The Mattie Kelly Fine and Performing Arts Center at Northwest Florida State College recently honored the volunteer docents and ushers who served this past arts season. The 100 Mattie Kelly Arts Center ushers volunteered more than 7,000 hours this year, serving patrons who attended events scheduled at the center. The 20 Art Gallery docents volunteered a total of more than 563 hours serving visitors to the center's two Art Galleries. June Jepson of Valparaiso was recognized as having contributed the most volunteer hours as an Art Gallery Docent since last April.

Ushers and docents normally commit to serve September through July and receive training. Ushers receive complimentary admission to the show occurring the night they serve. Docents who serve in the Art Galleries prior to a theater performance may also receive complimentary admission on a space available basis. Additional volunteer docents and ushers are needed. For information on becoming an usher contact Delores Merrill, House Manager, at 729-6065 and for Art Gallery docent information contact KC Williams, Gallery Director, at 729-6044.

Ushers direct patrons to their seats, hand out programs and most importantly, present a warm welcome to patrons of all events held at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. They also assist with scrapbooking, concessions, and other behind-the-scenes needs at the center. Art Gallery docents help enhance the viewing experience of visitors to the center's two galleries by offering information and insight about current exhibitions and the college's permanent art collections. Docents also present a traveling art exhibits in local schools.
