6/8/2011 -

The Galleries at the Mattie Kelly Fine and Performing Arts Center on the Niceville campus of Northwest Florida State College will host two new exhibitions June 12 to July 24, 2011.

In the center's McIlroy Gallery, artist Maja Godlewska will take you on an otherworldly journey through wind and clouds with her installation "Outer Bands". The exhibit consists of large scale abstract paintings that seem to float, suspended from the ceiling. She uses heat-transfer prints, inks and other pigments to create images on diaphanous poly mesh sheets that are painted on both sides.

According to the artist, she is "interested in the phenomena that occur between the form and formlessness, order and chaos, things that seem permanent, yet are subject to change and evolution." This philosophy and her interest in weather and cloud formations come to life in her work. Godlewska is an Assistant Professor of Art at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her areas of specialization are in painting, drawing and installation.

Jacqueline Bishop's exhibition "Losing Ground: Imaginary Landscapes" will be on display in the Holzhauer Gallery at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. Bishop, who is based in New Orleans, focuses on all aspects of the landscape. From land politics to exploring art historical references, she uses her dedication to nature to extend her painting surface to found baby shoes. Her collection of shoes comes from the streets of New Orleans and different parts of North and South America. Her preference for working with smaller scale objects creates an intimate setting as one views the works on shelves installed at a child's eye level. Bishop holds her MFA from Tulane University and has exhibited nationally and internationally.

Exhibitions at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center Galleries are free of charge and open to the public. The Galleries are located in the arts wing of the college's fine and performing arts complex, at 100 College Boulevard, Niceville. Gallery Hours are Monday to Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The Galleries are closed Friday, Saturday, and holidays. Both exhibitions will also be open 90 minutes prior to the start of NWFSC's summer musical, "Big River" which will appear in the mainstage theater of the Mattie Kelly Arts Center on July 20 to 23.
